If you are considering some major remodeling you may benefit from the Energy Upgrade California program that offers up to $6,500 in rebates for upgrades that improve your overall, whole house energy efficiency by 10% to 40%. Check it out at www.energyupgradeca.com.
We are an Energy Upgrade Ca. approved whole house rater for single family residential and multi-family building projects.
Does it really make a difference? Yes to both! It is required by the State of California Regulations Title 24 Part 6 Energy Standards. A field study conducted by the EPA found that in a sample group of 14,000 homes 74% had an incorrect amount of refrigerant in the air conditioner. This may be the case even in new installations.
An air conditioner that is over or under charged may work but not as efficiently causing you to spend more for wasted energy. The study also found that 70% of those 14,000 homes had heated or cooled air leaking through poorly installed ducts and equipment. That means your system is working harder, longer and costing more because it is trying to heat or cool the whole world! How much are your ducts leaking? Build it right, verify and test, save money and the environment!
The type of rating or test depends on which of the 16 climate zones in California you live in. If you have questions about what ratings are required in your city see the Home page "Helpful Links to Learn More" or please contact us. It is always in your best interests to hire a state licensed contractor that insists on obtaining a building permit.
California is leading the way in energy efficiency and to do that they have regulated strict requirements for the energy consuming components of your home. These energy efficiency requirements include third party independent verification for one of the largest energy users, your air conditioning and heating system. This verification or testing is what is referred to as a HERS (Home Energy Rating System) rating.
HERS Raters like us are trained and certified to perform this rating or testing. We do not, in fact cannot work for the contractor. We only verify their work.
Who pays for this? That depends on how your agreement or contract between you and your contractor is written. If you are not sure, ask your contractor.
A good contractor will spell out the requirements before work begins. But, if you are stuck in this spot, contact us and we can help you through the process as an owner/builder.
To proceed as an owner/builder go to www.calcerts.com and click, “user self registration”. Follow the prompts to register as an owner/builder. It involves printing and signing a form then sending it along with a copy of your driver’s license back. Most all of the time you are registering for an Alterations Project even if it is a new system in a house that had none before. You will receive an email with a username and password, from there with your permission to use your username and password we can complete the process and forms for you when you have passing test results. Please complete just this registration before you call for a rating.
